The power of tradition

Kroustas Village

I travelled through towns and villages and unknown foreign places,
but my mind has settled in the Krustian lair,
says the poet.

Krustas is his people. Not that he has no beauty (he has too much!). Nor is it lacking in tradition (and it has plenty of it!).

It's just that it's its inhabitants who steal the show thanks to their lively temperament. Capuchin, active, with an inexhaustible sense of humour, they keep their village alive and open their big mouth to every visitor.

About the village

Kroustas is a village and the seat of the homonymous community located in the prefecture of Lasithi and belongs to the municipality of Agios Nikolaos (formerly Mirabello district).

According to the 2011 census it has 476 inhabitants and an area of 30,481 square kilometres.

It is built at an altitude of 540 metres and nearby is Kritsa, while from Agios Nikolaos it is about 13 kilometres.

Sightseeing

In the location of Lakkai is the church of St. John the Theologian.

According to the inscription, it was rebuilt or renovated and frescoed in 1348. It is a one-room church with an arched roof and its built iconostasis is interesting.

Characteristic, traditional, Cretan village, 20 minutes from Agio Nikolaos.

A fertile place, famous for its traditional food and feasts. Kind-hearted people with a Cretan flame in their hearts, are eager to tell the story of what happened in the village of Krusta, and in the entire hinterland of the municipality, over the centuries.

Every year there is the 'Feast of Amygdalos' and the 'Feast of the Seven Zymos', which are directly linked to the gastronomic character of the village.
